 NEWS AND RESULTS
SCCA SC Region Solo Event - Florence, SC August 7, 2010
Article by SC Region Autocross Chairman - Thomm Mezzapelle
Saturday August 07 was the fifth event in the South Carolina Region's 2010 autocross season. The location was The Florence Civic Center upper lot. The course was a little unusual for the region in that it contained a crossover. The asphalt was newly sealed and striped giving the lot a slightly slippery surface (especially in the rain during the Friday setup session).

We were able to get on the site early and begin the setup on Friday afternoon. Brian Hayes designed a fun, fast course that used a great deal of the lot and resulted in a 40+ second course. The crossover meant only two cars could be on course at a time. The course also had several boxes, a wallolm section, a slalom section, some tight turns and a lot of FUN.

The event attracted 82 entries, in 25 classes ranging from an f125 shifter cart, to lots of Mazdas, new muscle and pony cars, a 45 year old Mustang, a Rabbit, plenty of Hondas, and Subarus. The weather for Saturday was sunny, hot, and pure South Carolina in the summer. The crowd was full of happy people ready for a fun day enjoying their cars.

We ran three groups with six, yes six runs per person. Lots of seat time was had by all. A few people payed for extra seat time and were exhausted by the day's end. We offered up the possibility of fun runs after the awards and didn't get enough interest to cover the course.

We had some really good battles on the course during the day. Lets start with the Pros, our biggest class of the day with 14 entries. The Zimmer super Rabbit had two drivers in Pro class, and a third driving alone in FSP. The two Pro drivers ended the day separated by less then .3 sec. with the owner Geoff Zimmer in second ahead of Matt Palombi who finished third. The course designer Brian Hayes finished in fifth driving the Frankenstook.
